Can a French Bulldog swim?

French Bulldogs are among the worst swimmers of any breed. A flat face means the muzzle sits low and takes on water, and a dense, front-heavy chest with short legs gives almost no natural flotation. Most cannot keep their head clear unaided, which is exactly the problem a chin float solves.

How to size a French Bulldog

Fit is decided by chest, not by breed. Run a tape around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs, and pull it snug without compressing. That number picks the size. A French Bulldog usually measures 20-26 in, which is why size M is the starting point, but measure the dog in front of you rather than trusting a breed average.

What the vest does for a French Bulldog

Chin float. A pad under the jaw holds the muzzle clear of the water instead of letting it drop. On flat-faced and short-legged breeds this is the difference between swimming and struggling.
