Size Guide

Measure the chest, not the breed

Two dogs of the same breed can be two sizes apart. Run a tape around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs, and pull it snug without compressing the fur. That number picks the size.

Size Chest Weight Tested lift Fits like
XS 12–15 in up to 10 lb 4 lb Chihuahua, mini dachshund
S 15–20 in 10–20 lb 7 lb Dachshund, Jack Russell
M 20–26 in 20–40 lb 12 lb French bulldog, corgi, spaniel
L 26–33 in 40–70 lb 18 lb Labrador, golden retriever
XL 33–42 in 70 lb + 26 lb Ridgeback, shepherd, mastiff

If he is between sizes

Go up. A vest slightly too big can be strapped down. One slightly too small restricts the shoulders and he will fight it.

Checking the fit

  • Two fingers. You should slide two fingers under any strap, no more.
  • The handle sits over the shoulders, not the lower back. If it has slid backwards the vest is too loose.
  • Full shoulder movement. Walk him in it before he swims in it.
  • Chin pad under the jaw, not against the throat.

Why too big is worse than none

A loose vest rides up over the shoulders when he swims and pushes into the throat. That is more dangerous than no vest, because it restricts him exactly when he needs to breathe hardest.
